Quito, Ecuador: Journey 2 Middle Earth.

One of my most unique and fun solo experiences of 2023 was to the Capital City of Ecuador, aka...Mitad del Mundo,” or “Middle of the World.” Read on to see what you are missing!🌎

Mitad del Mundo

On my first day in Quito, about an hour after checking in, I experienced an earthquake! It was quite noticeable and the building swayed slightly for about 10 seconds! After my brief brush with death, I took a nap and got ready for a night tour of the city I lined up via cable car. The city is beautifully lit at night and should be experienced...even if you see the same places during the day.

The next day I went to the Mitad del Mundo Museum. A very cool, interactive park is more like it. You are guided throughout the venue and you are given a history lesson about the indigenous people who inhabited the area(some still do). Also, you are shown interactive differences between the northern and southern hemispheres. You are also participating in interactive activities that demonstrate how gravity works on both sides of the world!

Demonstration on how water flows counterclockwise in the north and clockwise in the south.

Just up the road from the Mitad del Mundo Museum, there is the Mitad del Mundo Monument. This is not actually on the equator line, but more of a symbol/representation of the center of the earth.

There are very few places I would return to for 2nd visit and Quito makes that short list. If you are looking for a new adventure in South America and trying to figure out where to start, I recommend this experience to anyone trying to break ground new ground and experience something different!
