Colombia: Breaking Bad...PT.2

Medellin...once known as the capital of drug traffickers, none more infamous than Pablo Escobar. Medellin has taken many years to emerge from the dust left by the drug wars. Although much of Colombia is still impoverished, there is still beauty in its landscapes and people.

Botero Square

My first day in Medellin consisted of a great private tour of the city. It started at Botero Square, located in downtown Medellin...a popular area where people hang out and enjoy the sights, sounds, and food from local vendors. Botero Square consists of 23 donated statues from renowned local artist Fernando Botero. Make sure you take plenty of pics!

Additional Note: When you walk downtown on the way to Botero Square, you may be shocked like I was to find prostitutes lurking everywhere! Think Times Square in New York City in the 70's times 10. lol. They are not crazy aggressive or anything...but I was taken aback by how casual and openly accepted everything was, especially in front of the local police! lol

Next, I was taken to a different part of the city where you can take a cable car and go thru the Comunas. It is a great way to get to your destination and the view of the Comunas is amazing!

Additional Note: The cable car ride takes 18 mins to get to the top, and 18 mins to get back down.

Next, I was taken to Comuna 13. Once considered one of the most dangerous parts of Medellin, this area has become one of the most lively and artistic streets. The Comuna walls are filled with beautiful graffiti throughout...and you will find street entertainers along with vendors selling goods everywhere. Getting to the top is a must...the views are fantastic!

Additional Note: Be aware you will have to do some serious walking! The initial ascent is quite steep, but then you get to a part of the Comuna where a series of escalators help you get to the top.

I enjoyed my time in Medellin and I certainly appreciate the people I met along the way that made my trip memorable. Don't let what you see on TV fool ya...experience Medellin for yourself!
