Berlin: If These Walls Could Talk.

Deutschland! I've always wanted to visit Germany and see all the history I have only read about in books and seen afar from movies and documentaries...(queue dramatic music) This is Berlin! lol

Me @ Berlin Wall.
Me @ The Berlin Wall.

So right off the bat, let me say I was very naive in my assumption of the Berlin Wall. I just assumed the wall was this straight-line wall that dived the city right down the middle...instead, it was a wall that ran 27 miles thru the city in various ways. Some parts of the wall are still preserved for historical purposes throughout the city. There are also memorials dedicated to the people who died attempting to climb over the wall throughout the years. Some people made it over successfully, but mostly the memorials are for those who did not. Speaking of memorials, one of the more interesting ones is the Holocaust Memorial. A simple thought-out series of cement blocks of various heights almost set out to look like a maze.

One of the many sights people come to see in Berlin is the Brandenburg Gate. Interesting side note, right across the gate sits the Aldon Hotel. Does the name not ring a bell? Remember when Michael Jackson dangled his baby from the balcony? This is that very same hotel! lol

About a mile up the road from the Brandenburg Gate sits Victory Column. Go get your steps in!

Berlin has plenty of sights and things to do. I spent most of my time making sure I saw all the tourist traps like The Berlin Mall, TV Tower, and Check Point Charlie. Another site that is well-known but not memorialized is Hitler's bunker where he made his last stand and took his own life. It sits below a little park in the middle of a residential building.

Leading up to my trip to Berlin, I spent months learning German. It wasn't necessary, but it did help in some instances. It was fun being able to understand and recognize words throughout my trip! I will conclude this blog with these words I learned in Deutsche... Ich Liebe Reisen!:)
